5.11 Rush 24 2.0 Review: The Gold Standard of Bug Out Bags
The Good
- Bombproof construction (1050D Nylon)
- Incredible organization (admiral pocket, fleece eyewear pocket)
- MOLLE webbing allows for infinite expansion
- Hydration bladder compatible
The Bad
- Heavy even when empty (3.8 lbs)
- Looks "Tactical" (screams "I have a gun" in some settings)
- No hip belt included (sold separately)
If you walk onto any military base or police station, you will see this backpack. The 5.11 Rush 24 has been the default "tactical backpack" for a decade. The new 2.0 version adds a padded laptop sleeve and concealed carry compartment.
But does a "tactical" bag make a good Bug Out Bag?
5.11 Rush 24 2.0 Backpack
37 Liter capacity. 1050D Nylon. The standard by which other bags are measured.
Check PriceDurability: The Tank
Most hiking backpacks (Osprey, REI) are made of thin, lightweight ripstop nylon. They are great for hiking, but if you drag them through broken glass or rebar in an urban disaster, they rip.
The Rush 24 is made of 1050D Nylon. You could drag this bag behind a truck and it would survive.
- Zippers: YKK self-repairing zippers (the best in the world).
- Stitching: Stress points are double-stitched and bar-tacked.
Organization: A Place for Everything
The "Rush" name implies you can grab it and go.
- The Admin Panel: The front pocket has slots for pens, flashlights, multi-tools, and maps.
- The Shove-It Pocket: A hidden compartment behind the front pocket allows you to quickly shove a jacket or helmet.
- Eyewear: A fleece-lined pocket on top protects your sunglasses (or night vision).
Grey Man Tip
If you buy this bag, get it in Black, Navy, or Grey. Avoid Camo or Flat Dark Earth (FDE) if you want to blend in during an urban evacuation.
Comfort & Load
This is a 37-liter bag. It holds enough for 24-48 hours of gear.
- The Shoulder Straps: Thick, contoured yoke system. Very comfortable.
- The flaw: It does not come with a hip belt. If you load this with 40lbs of ammo and water, your shoulders will scream after 5 miles. You have to buy the hip belt separately.
Verdict
For a Get Home Bag (to keep in your car) or a 24-hour Bug Out Bag, this is the best option on the market. It is durable enough to last 20 years.
