Bugging In vs. Bugging Out: The Decision Matrix

The most dangerous decision you will make is staying or going. We provide a decision matrix based on threat levels, resource status, and family mobility. Learn the triggers that should prompt a bug-out.

In the prepping community, "Bugging Out" (leaving home) is romanticized. Everyone wants to grab their bag and run to the hills.

Reality Check: Bugging out makes you a homeless refugee. You are leaving your shelter, your stockpile, and your community to live in the woods or a car. It should always be Plan B.

So, how do you decide? Use this decision matrix.

When to BUG IN (Stay Home)

You should stay home in 90% of scenarios. Your home has walls, a roof, and 300lbs of food.

  1. Pandemic: Leaving exposes you to vectors. Stay inside, lock the doors.
  2. Civil Unrest (Local): If the riots are downtown and you are in the suburbs, stay put. Fortify.
  3. Severe Weather (Blizzard/Heat): Your house is better insulated than a tent.
  4. Grid Down (Short/Medium Term): Ride it out with your stored water and food.

When to BUG OUT (Leave)

You only leave if your home becomes a death trap.

  1. Immediate Threat to Life:
    • Fire / Wildfire approaching.
    • Flood waters rising.
    • Hurricane Category 4/5 direct hit.
    • Chemical spill / Industrial accident nearby.
  2. Loss of Containment:
    • Your house has been breached by attackers.
    • A shell/bomb has destroyed the roof.
  3. Resource Exhaustion:
    • You have 0 water left and no way to procure it.
    • The sewers have backed up into your home (disease risk).

The "Triggers" System

Don't wait until the panic starts. Set predefined triggers for your family.

  • Trigger: "If the wildfire crosses Highway 9, we load the car."
  • Trigger: "If the power is out for more than 7 days, we go to Grandma's farm."
  • Trigger: "If we hear gunfire on our block, we leave out the back."

The PACE Plan

Never have just one plan.

  • P (Primary): Bug In. Stay safe at home.
  • A (Alternate): Bug Out to a relative's house in the next town (Vehicle).
  • C (Contingency): Bug Out to a public campground/hotel (Vehicle).
  • E (Emergency): Bug Out on foot to the woods (Last Resort).

Conclusion

Don't be eager to become a refugee. Fight to stay home as long as possible. But when the trigger is pulled, do not hesitate. He who hesitates is lost.
